TOEFL Preparation Series: Master Make vs. Do and Like vs. Alike

💡 Konsep Dasar: Menghindari Kekeliruan Diksi

Dalam tes TOEFL, kesalahan pilihan kata sering kali sengaja disisipkan pada bagian kata kerja ekspresi (*Make/Do*) atau kata sifat pembanding (*Like/Alike*). Mari pelajari perbedaan mekanismenya:

1. Make vs. Do

Kata Kerja	Makna Pokok & Penggunaan	Kolokasi Populer dalam TOEFL
Make	Membuat, memproduksi, menciptakan sesuatu yang baru (ada hasil fisiknya).	make a mistake, make a decision, make money, make a report, make progress.
Do	Melakukan pekerjaan, aktivitas, tugas, atau tindakan umum yang sudah ada.	do homework, do research, do a service, do an experiment, do business.

2. Like vs. Alike

Kata Hubung	Fungsi Gramatikal	Aturan Posisi Kalimat
Like	Preposisi (Kata Depan) bermakna "seperti".	Wajib diikuti objek kata benda langsung (contoh: John looks like his father).
Alike	Adjective / Predicate Adjective bermakna "mirip/sama".	Tidak boleh diikuti kata benda, diletakkan di akhir setelah kata kerja (contoh: The twins look alike).

TRIK CEPAT TOEFL: • Jika ada titik-titik yang **diikuti kata benda** langsung di belakangnya, pilih Like. • Jika titik-titik berada di **akhir klausa / kalimat** setelah kata kerja penghubung, pilih Alike.

📝 Contoh Soal TOEFL (Error Identification)

Pilihlah huruf di bawah kata atau frasa yang salah secara gramatikal:

The research team completed (A) the laboratory analysis and did (B) a significant progress (C) in discovering the renewable (D) energy source.

Kunci Jawaban: B (did)
Pembahasan: Perhatikan pasangan frasa kata benda setelah pilihan B, yaitu kata progress. Dalam hukum kolokasi bahasa Inggris baku (*collocation*), ungkapan membuat kemajuan tidak dipasangkan dengan kata kerja *do*, melainkan menggunakan kata kerja *make*.
Karena kalimat menggunakan tenses lampau (*completed*), maka bentuk yang benar untuk menggantikan kata *did* adalah made (*made a significant progress*).
